Character Name: Sha Gojyo
Series: Saiyuki (manga)
Age: 24
From When?: At the end of Saiyuki Reload Blast (chapter 22).
Warden Justification:
Prior relevant job experience: successfully adopted and socialised one (1) mass murderer.
Gojyo is a loud, foul-mouthed, crass, womanizing delinquent who makes his living by gambling, and spends most of his time on women and booze.
Gojyo is also the kind of person who, upon stumbling across a dying man, decides to take him home and personally nurse him back to health for over a month; doesn't question him about his background despite how obvious it is he's Done Some Stuff; protects him when the authorities come knocking to bring him to justice; is absolutely furious when he believes he was executed; and once things settle, offers said mass murderer to live with him indefinitely. During their first months together, he manages to get this previously lowkey suicidal man to somewhat look forward to living the rest of his life.
Gojyo is the kind of person to step in to break up a gang harassing a child; the kind of person who'll linger to comfort said child and ask where his parents are. He's the kind of person who will - temporarily - abandon the heavenly-mandated quest of going West so he can personally fucking murder the man who used a vulnerable child for his own gain before killing him with no remorse. He has a particular soft spot for sad women and abused children (thanks, Stepmom Of The Year). He - alongside the other members of Team Sanzo - goes out of his way to try to help Goku overcome his trauma-induced fear of snow. He willingly agrees to act as hostage when his old friend Banri owes a criminal gang money - despite knowing fully well that Banri is only looking out for number one and will leave Gojyo to be killed in his stead. As Hakkai puts it, Gojyo is very much not cut out for the criminal lifestyle.
Gojyo, in other words, for all of his crude, tough guy act, is at his core a very soft-hearted person who 200% believes in second chances and knows from painful personal experience how much circumstances beyond your control can shape the kind of life you end up living. He himself lived on the streets as a juvenile delinquent from the age of 8, after all, entirely because of his stepmother's abuse of him, her subsequent death when she attempted to kill him, and his older brother abandoning him afterwards.
Item: His lighter.
Abilities/Powers: As a half-youkai, he's stronger and more durable than normal humans, and can to an extent sense youkai energy. He can summon Shakujo, a staff with an axe on one end and a sickle on a chain on the other, which is his primary weapon of choice.
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies:
Bold of you to assume Gojyo plans ahead enough to have actual "strategies".
The Barge will be an adjustment, of course, but the way Gojyo, before meeting Hakkai, notes that just going through the motions of making-money-and-sleeping-around-when-he-feels-lonely is "so easy it makes him want to puke", the novelty of the Barge will probably do him good, as will being among people the majority of which are outcasts or "freaks" in some capacity. Due to his longtime loneliness and childhood trauma-induced feelings of being unworthy of love, he's going to be eager to hold onto connections formed during Breaches.
Since he's a bit of a layabout and not very prone to take official jobs seriously, Gojyo will resist being held to any "professional" warden standards. He'll claim to selfishly be here for his Deal, not for a genuine desire to help anyone. ...This will last all of five minutes before he gets very attached to whatever inmate he's assigned, or really any underdog inmate, especially younger and vulnerable ones, that he comes into contact with.
Gojyo will likely be best matched with inmates with similar backgrounds to himself: abused, unloved, abandoned. He will absolutely go to bat to defend such inmates, especially those on the younger side. He'll do well with inmates who need someone to be there for them 100%. He's used to ultra-violence and is a capable fighter himself - a violent inmate won't faze him. On the other hand, an inmate that needs a high degree of professionalism or deep intellectual debate is not going to be a good match. He'd probably do poorly with the type of inmate that looks like a little kid but is really an ancient monster: without access to a file, he could absolutely fall for the act, and once the truth comes out he'd likely resent the inmate for using such an underhanded tactic.
As for actual tactics: Gojyo will not drag an inmate kicking and screaming towards graduation. If he reaches out and gets told to fuck off, he will, no questions asked, but if the inmate changes their mind and reaches out on their own, he'll respond, again no questions asked.
Despite what his demeanour would suggest he's plenty emotionally intelligent and more than capable of talking to an inmate about their feelings, but again, he won't drag anything out of them if they don't want to share. His greatest strength will be just being there for his inmate: offering to hang out, sharing drinks, playing games, teaching them how to fight if that's something they need... A good match for an inmate that needs patience and human connection, a terrible one for those that need that pushing.
Deal: For Hakkai, Goku and himself (in that order of importance) to be immune to the effects of the Minus Wave no matter what.
History: CW: the history section contains mentions of child abuse, attempted child murder, and parent-child incest. Here.
Note: according to this wiki, Gojyo was kicked out on the street at age 12. The correct age is 8.
Sample Network Entry: Here and here.
Special Notes: I am, unfortunately, working with some poor-quality scanlations of the Reload Blast manga (I'm trying to get a hold of an official translation!! how dare it be out of print), so please let me know if I get something horribly wrong.
